La traviata (the original Italian title, which could be translated as “the wayward one”) is an opera in three acts with music by Giuseppe Verdi and an Italian libretto by Francesco Maria Piave—based on the novel by Alexandre Dumas (fils) La Dame aux Camélias (1848)—which premiered on March 6, 1853, at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice. Along with Rigoletto and Il Trovatore, it forms the popular operatic trilogy that Verdi composed in the middle of his career.
Originally titled Violetta—the name of the main character—it is apparently based on the life of a Parisian courtesan, Alphonsine Plessis. Piave and Verdi wanted to follow Dumas by giving the opera a contemporary setting, but the authorities at La Fenice insisted that it be set in the past, “around 1700.” It was not until the 1880s that the original wishes of the composer and librettist were respected and “realistic” productions were staged.
