1.102Troy has fallen. The roar of weapons has ceased, but the tragedy has only just begun. On the brink of disaster, amidst the smoldering ruins of a vanquished city, a group of women wait. They do not wait for justice, nor for redemption: they await their turn to be handed over as slaves to the victors. Hecuba, queen without a kingdom; Cassandra, cursed prophetess; Andromache, widow of a hero; Helen, she who was the cause or excuse of the war. Euripides wrote The Trojan Women in the 5th century BC, but his tragedy transcends history. It is a cry against the logic of conquest, a meditation on suffering that does not generate epic tales, on pain that has no place in official narratives. “The true defeat is not the fall of a city, but the dehumanization of those who survive.” Today, as new empires rise upon forgotten corpses, this work resonates as a warning. In every contemporary conflict, women and their children continue to occupy the place of the Trojan women: uprooted bodies, voices that no one wants to hear, lives that vanish among the statistics of horror.
