Pepita Jiménez is a lyric comedy or comic opera in two acts, originally premiered as a one-act work. Its music was written by the Spanish composer Isaac Albéniz. The original opera used an English libretto by Albéniz’s British collaborator, Baron Francis Money-Coutts, which was based on the novel of the same name by Juan Valera. The opera was later adapted many times, first by its composer and later by others, into numerous languages and different stagings, including both two-act and three-act versions.

Albéniz’s music employs striking rhythms and decorative chromatic melodic figures reminiscent of Andalusian folk music. His music is lyrical, and the “engaging vocal lines weave in and out of a fully orchestral texture that continually animates the work.” To depict the holiday, Albéniz uses both an operatic chorus and a children’s chorus. He also incorporates a significant amount of dance music into the opera’s festive scenes.
