El Teatro Real participated in the 2020 Cabalgata de los Reyes Magos organized by the Madrid City Council with a float that will carry the Ethiopian retinue of King Baltasar, evoking the fantasy of the performing arts and its traveling companies.
The Real’s float, with 16 meters long by 5.80 meters high, two floors and about 5 and a half tons in weight, simulates the stage of a theater -with its mouth, curtains and racks-, created from the transformation of a trailer truck like those usually used to transport and store the scenery, props and costumes for operas.
100 workers from the Royal Theater will participate in the float –40 children downstairs, and 60 adults upstairs and also in the outer retinue- characterized with tunics and turbans inspired by operas that take place in Africa or the East.
Throughout the parade of the Kings, with global conception and coordination by the Madrid City Council, the Royal Theater float will emit fragments of Aida and Nabucco, by Giuseppe Verdi, and Semiramide, by Gioacchino Rossini, operas that take place in Africa and the Middle East , “Cradle of Humanity, where a great culture flourished at the time of the Nativity and where an extraordinary diversity coexists today. A place where millenary tribes created and continue to create beauty in close contact with Nature ”, according to the Madrid City Council guidelines.
Opera is, like the Cavalcade of the Magi, an ephemeral space of fantasy, which is born on stage and fades when the curtain falls. A parade of emotions also guided by a star: Art!
